Oleg Grigoryevich Sukonko

Born on July 16, 1951 in Khvoshno Village, Vitebsk Region. After traveling the road of school, medical college, medical and sanitary station, military service, he entered Vitebsk State Medical Institute and graduated with honours degree in 1978.
Dr. Sukonko started his professional career in the Centre as oncologist in Urologic Oncology Department in 1984.
In 1990 he defended his master’s thesis.
In 1994 he was given the highest-grade qualification of urologist.
In 2004 he defended his doctor’s thesis.
On October 7, 2010 Oleg Grigoryevich Sukonko was appointed Director of N. N. Alexandrov National Cancer Centre.
He is an active propagandist and organizer of new up-to-date patterns of economic management. Owing to his personal initiative and high capacity of work, the ability to rally the collective body of the Centre’s employees, new, high-priority, high-tech efficient modalities of diagnosis and treatment for urologic cancer patients have been designed and adopted in common practice.
Oleg Grigoryevich Sukonko was the first in the Republic of Belarus to perform an extracorporal resection of the single kidney; during the time period of his work in the Centre, he performed more than 3000 operations, most of them being increased intricacy.
Under the guidance of O. G. Sukonko, the framework of the Centre was rearranged, its logistics was significantly improved. Overhaul and routine repairs are being actively carried out, new medical projects are under construction. Due to exact fulfilment of state programs and assignments, medical care for cancer patients has risen to a qualitatively new level, making it possible to abandon referring Belarus’ residents with malignant tumors for treatment abroad and, accordingly, to draw foreign patients in medical care of high quality. The main result of fulfilling the programs is a 11.7% mortality decrease despite cancer incidence growth by 18.4%.
On the initiative of Oleg Grigoryevich Sukonko, a new concept of the development of the country’s cancer service has been designed with regard to current global trends, aimed at implementation of screening and early diagnosis of basic cancer sites.
Oleg Grigoryevich lays particular emphasis on training of highly skilled personnel.
He supervised the defence of 3 doctor’s and 5 master’s theses. He is the author of more than 250 scientific works, 3 monographs, 6 patents, 10 practical guidelines, 1 textbook. He has created the urologic oncologist school enjoying high prestige among the colleagues in many countries of the world.
As the Chief Supernumerary Oncologist, O. G. Sukonko co-ordinates the activities of the whole cancer service of Belarus.
Oleg Grigoryevich is one of the most competent global practising oncologists, which is acknowledged by his membership in the World and European Associations of Urology. He is heading the Oncology Problems Commission of the Public Health Ministry, the Board of the Social Association “Belarusian Society of Oncologists”; he is the Chairman of the Centre’s Academic Council, member of two Boards for Thesis Defence. Editor-in-Chief of the scientific and practical edition “Oncological Journal”, the edition “A Handbook in Oncology”, is the first of this kind in the Republic of Belarus, and member of editorial boards of a number of national and foreign journals. Alongside the versatile organizational, managerial, scientific and therapeutic activities, Oleg Grigoryevich Sukonko is engaged in doing great social work: since 2014 he is member of the Council of the Republic, National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus.
He is awarded the badge “Excellent Public Health Worker, Republic of Belarus (2004)”, the medal “For Labour Merits” (2010). The honorary title “Distinguished Doctor of the Republic of Belarus” was conferred upon him in 2016.
