Diagnostics of oncological diseases

At present, N. N. Alexandrov National Cancer Centre has at its disposal the whole potential needed for conducting examinations. Modern facilities, the high level of specialist training and the techniques used world-wide make it possible to detect malignant neoplasms at an early stage, to define the stage of tumor spread, and to evaluate the efficacy of the treatment administered.

Each of the steps of diagnostic examinations is absolutely essential for establishing the accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.

Read in detail

N. N. Alexandrov National Cancer Centre provides the whole range of current diagnostic examinations:

  • X-ray and ultrasonic diagnosis
  • Radionuclide and radiologic diagnosis
  • Endoscopic and laboratory diagnosis
  • Molecular genetic diagnosis
  • etc.

Early diagnosis

Cancer detected at an early stage is curable in more than 90% of the cases. The diagnostic potential of modern medicine enables to detect not only malignant neoplasms but also precancers, to find the smallest deviations in the body and to learn about the susceptibility for this or that disease; they help to monitor and direct the treatment process.

The diagnostic services of the Centre are equipped with up-to-date facilities allowing to make the diagnosis at the earliest possible date in the most complicated cases. About 1 mln various diagnostic and laboratory tests are annually performed, more than 190,000 patients are examined in the consultative and outpatient settings.

Efficient diagnosis in a short space of time

N. N. Alexandrov National Cancer Centre can provide the whole range of diagnostic examinations in a short space of time: CT, MRI, PET-CT; US-, CT-, MRI- guided biopsy. The diagnostics is performed in compliance with international protocols by highly skilled professionals having wide experience of many years’ standing.

Verification of histological diagnoses made in other clinics

N. N. Alexandrov National Cancer Centre has its own histological and molecular genetic laboratories equipped with up-to-date facilities. The laboratory specialists master the current techniques of sample analysis, they verify histological diagnoses made in other clinics.

Cancer stage diagnosis and treatment monitoring

With emergence of PET diagnosis, a new epoch commenced in the field of making a definitive malignancy diagnosis, observing the disease course and treatment monitoring. Such diagnostic modalities as CT and MRI are quite informative and enable to judge about the changes in the tumor size; how-ever, accurate evaluation of tumor metabolism, its response to treatment is possible only with positron emission tomography.

Positron emission tomography

PET-CT is an indispensible modality in oncology allowing to assess the disease extension, presence of metastases, as well as to monitor the curative effect. The studies are conducted according to the European protocols using high-quality radiopharmaceuticals produced in the Centre’s own laboratory and certified for quality control in conformity with global standards.
